Accessibility Tips for Presenters

As you know, SSU is working to improve the accessibility of its digital materials (see the university's  for details). With that context in mind, the CTI has some suggestions for how to make your presentations and presentation materials more accessible. You might consider symposium prep to be an opportunity to practice some approaches that you may end up using again in course design work.

Live Presentations

  • Choose a sans serif font, especially for text beyond slide headings.  include Arial, Aptos, Calibri, Helvetica, Impact, and Open Sans.
  • Font size recommendations can vary but  a minimum 24 size and use of headings when relevant to slide content.
  • Consider using  on slides. Avoid using color alone to convey information.
  • If you're showing images or visuals, describe that content to your live audience so attendees who may be unable to see that content can understand those presentation elements.
  • Speak clearly and slowly; consider how much time your presentation will take without speeding quickly through your slides and remarks if you have time to rehearse or check your timing in advance.
  • Present using the room microphones; CTI will have folks on hand to help ensure room technology is working.
  • Display captions for any video content you plan to share.

Slide Deck Accessibility Resources

Note: many of these recommendations anticipate contexts where you plan to share out your presentation materials beyond your live presentation.
